Hobart’s northern suburb of Moonah is a short 10-minute drive from the capital’s CBD. The area is primarily flat, with the hills and mountains lining the horizon. Residents can enjoy the summer sun streaming in the windows and the stunning snow-capped view of Mount Wellington during winter.

This buzzing suburb offers stores for everyday needs to occasional purchases. Commonwealth and Bendigo Bank branches, Australia Post, a newsagency, petrol stations and Chemist Warehouse are all located along Main Road. A quick trip to Moonah’s Woolworths, 9/11 bottleshop, Island Fresh Produce or the local bakeries will ensure your pantry is always full.
If you don’t feel like cooking, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Mexican and local breweries, bars and restaurants are all available nearby. Local favourites include Sault Café, St Albi Bar & Eatery and Everyday Smokin’ BBQ & Bar.
Keep the kids (young and old) entertained at Zone Bowling and Adventure Golf or visit BCF to get ready for a weekend away. The array of auto shops, mechanics and car dealers in the suburb will make life easy if you ever have vehicle issues. Vet, dental and health centres are also conveniently located within Moonah.
You won’t have to travel far from home for a make-over, with hair and beauty salons and boutique shoe and clothing stores within the area. If you are feeling stressed, the Hobart Float Centre and Massage is also available on Main Road.
If it’s your home that needs a revamp, Harris Scarfe, Good Guys, Fantastic Furniture and Harvey Norman are all in Moonah. The suburb also has a fantastic selection of trade stores, including Wyllie Tiles, Nuts & Bolts Tasmania, Mitre 10 and Beacon Lighting.
Bunnings is a mere five-minute drive north from the centre of Moonah. Drive a short 10 minutes south to the CBD’s main shopping precinct or just 10 to 15 minutes across the River Derwent to Eastlands, Tasmania’s largest shopping centre.
Situated within the suburb of Moonah are St Therese’s Catholic School and Bowden Road Primary School. Moonah Primary School is also close, located just across the suburb border in Derwent Park. All three primary schools are co-educational and cater for Kindergarten to Year 6.
The nearest secondary school, New Town High School, sits on the outskirts of Moonah in New Town. If you prefer a school a little further away, public transport in Moonah is easily accessible.
Moonah also offers two driving schools.
Moonah Sports Centre provides a broad range of sporting choices, including basketball, netball, badminton, dance, drama, futsal, table tennis, squash, volleyball and wheelchair sports. A variety of martial arts and self-defence clubs are available in Moonah, including Jiu-Jitsu and Karate. The Rotary Club of Moonah is also a great way to get involved with the community and local fundraisers.
In the neighbouring suburb of New Town, you also have the option to join the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association, Hobart Bowls Centre or New Town Croquet Club.
