Experience Hobart Waterfront

Many Tasmanian families cherish the memory of visiting Hobart Waterfront for some delicious fish and chips, followed by a luscious and creamy ice cream. Mures is just one of the many seafood destinations along the waterfront where you can indulge in this experience while enjoying the stunning view at Constitution Dock.

Constitution Dock is a popular harbour-side area in Hobart, located on the Derwent River. It is situated next to other famous Hobart landmarks such as Victoria Dock, Salamanca Place, and Battery Point and is part of the beautiful Sullivans Cove foreshore.

Also located on the Hobart Waterfront is the Brooke Street Pier, which is both a building and a boat. This four-storey floating pier houses a community market called TRADE, where you can explore a variety of unique, boutique Tasmanian businesses and what they offer.

Museum Things to do in Southern Tasmania | Fall Real Estate

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) continue to amaze locals and visitors with its child-friendly and engaging activities and rooms dedicated to the inclusion and safety of children.

You may find that a couple of hours of fun is simply not enough - so ensure to bring a packed morning tea and lunch, or you can order a coffee, meal or drink at the Courtyard Cafe located on the premises.

The TMAG openly welcomes families, regularly updates its displays, and runs free activities, programs, and events for all ages.

This exhibition focuses on a sense of home and place for people in lutruwita/Tasmania.  With multiple spaces and hidden gems, this space will be a favourite for even the fussiest of children. From the swift slide to the cozy reading nook and numerous specimens found in many creative hiding spots, you will find new things to look at and do for the entire exhibition session.

Entry is free, and bookings are required. However, you can book a spot on the day using the sign-in iPad at the entrance to the exhibition. Five bookable sessions (45 minutes each, the last session is 90 minutes) are available daily during TMAG’s regular opening hours.

Another exciting activity the museum runs daily (for free) is a backpack you can borrow for an hour. It contains objects, props, activities and resources over a range of subject areas to help families explore specific areas of the museum!

In one of Hobart’s most significant heritage buildings, Maritime Museum has a permanent exhibition surrounding Tasmania’s maritime heritage story.

“This exhibition covers a range of themes covering Tasmania's maritime heritage story: Indigenous watercraft, European exploration and navigation, convict transportation, whaling, colonial and global trade, migration, naval history, ship-building, model ships and shipwrecks.”
- Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum has the ‘Writing and the Sea’ exhibition that explores a selection of objects and stories about shipwrecks, the love of boats, the 1975 Tasman Bridge disaster, and so much more!

With multiple exhibitions throughout the Carnegie Building, near Hobart city’s business centre and close to Constitution Dock and Sullivans Cove, Maritime Museum will make for a tremendous educational excursion with your family.

Originating from their late mother’s passion for handmade treasures - making jams, sewing clothes, stitching blankets and renovating houses - Rebar Sear was born to provide a creative space in the Huon Valley community.

Inside this local cafe, you will find delicious coffee, gluten-free treats, and creative treasures to purchase and browse while waiting for your order.

They are focused on connecting locals and having events to remember! Many of their events involve live music, wood-fired pizzas, beer, wine & cider, and, of course, shopping!

If that isn't enough, every Saturday at 8 am, the Reba Run Group departs from their shop to complete a 5km route. The running group has no age limit (no one is too young or old)!

Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs

Check the weather forecast and find the best day for swimming outdoors and exploring beneath the dense forest in southern Tasmania - a 90-minute scenic drive from Hobart.

Many families put Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs on the list to do during summer. Hastings Caves, a dolomite cave with stunning subterranean formations, is a spacious cave with 250 stairs.

Be sure to check the opening times on the Parks and Wildlife Service website and book the Cave Tour in advance by phone (details below) before you undertake your trip south.

The open-air thermal pool that gathers and circulates natural thermal spring water, cave-like change rooms, warm showers, and BBQ areas fit with a fireplace to warm up those wet toes will entice you to stay the whole day! So, bring morning tea, a BBQ lunch to sizzle and afternoon snacks for the trip home!
