Things to do

Facing southeast into Storm Bay, Clifton Beach is exposed to strong southerly swells, resulting in waves that average 1 to 2 metres. This makes it an excellent spot for surfing, with the beach consistently providing good beach breaks. However, these conditions can create hazardous rip currents, making it one of the most dangerous beaches in Tasmania. The beach's natural beauty and challenging surf conditions make it a favoured location for various activities such as walking, jogging, surfing and other water-related activities.
Pipeclay Lagoon, adjacent to Clifton Beach, is a pristine and secluded spot ideal for oyster farming due to its clean, nutrient-rich waters from the Southern Ocean. The Tasmanian Oyster Co. hatchery, Shellfish Culture, cultivates full and plump oysters. These oysters offer a unique tasting experience, making these oysters a coveted delicacy. So, while living in Clifton Beach, you can brush up on your oyster knowledge and become a regular customer of Shellfish Culture oysters!

The Clifton Beach Surf Life Saving Club, established in 1963, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of locals and visitors. Located at the beach's western end, the club provides volunteer patrols on weekends and public holidays during the summer months. These patrols are essential given the beach's hazardous conditions, particularly when waves exceed 1 meter. The club's presence enhances safety and fosters a sense of community among beachgoers and surfers.
Clifton Beach Nippers is a summer program that provides local children with fun, beach activities while teaching essential surf skills and water safety. Through this surf education and development initiative, participants learn how to stay safe in the water (however, they do not teach children to swim) and help protect their peers and community. Nippers are a vital part of Clifton Beach’s active community, promoting both individual growth and collective responsibility.
In Lauderdale, a town nearby, a purpose-built facility was created to enhance the experience for children and their parents and guardians and make learning this essential life skill more enjoyable. Drawing on extensive experience, Kim developed the swimKamp facility, designed to complement her team’s distinctive teaching style. This unique venue provides a supportive environment that delivers a positive and effective swimming education.

This natural setting provides a stunning backdrop for beach activities and a habitat for diverse plant and animal species, contributing to the area's natural environment.
