Howrah is a beach-side suburb located east of Hobart’s CBD in the Clarence Region of Tasmania. From there, you can enjoy a stunning view of the water and Hobart’s western suburbs while watching the sunset behind Mount Wellington, Kunanyi, every evening.

 

Howrah is conveniently located, with a 15-19 minutes drive to the CBD and a 15-minute drive to the international airport. This makes it an ideal central location for businessmen and women travelling to the airport for interstate commutes or work in the city.

Transport availability in Howrah

There are several transportation options available for travelling to and around Howrah. These include buses, taxis, cars, bikes, and walking.

 

For those looking for an affordable way to get around Hobart East and CBD, Metro’s bus service is a great choice! With multiple routes running throughout the day, you can easily travel between the Shoreline Shopping Centre in Howrah and the Eastlands Shopping Centre via the main road of Clarence Street. Metro utilises the inner streets of Howrah, starting at Yarram Street and coming out at Bayfield Street. To plan your route, check out the network map, which you can download here.

 

Since August 2021, locals have utilised a new service in the nearby suburb of Bellerive. Derwent Ferries is a convenient option for commuting between Bellerive and Hobart, as it operates via the river. A one-way trip takes about fifteen minutes.

Things to do in Howrah

Wentworth Park Play Park is an excellent destination for families, offering a variety of activities. The park has play equipment and ample space for ball games and other outdoor activities. The park also features a bike education track, where you can teach your children how to ride and learn about road rules, including navigation through roundabouts, speed humps, rail crossings, and traffic lights.

 

In addition, the park provides free barbecues on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have a dog, you can take it for a walk on a lead, but they ask you to stay at least 10 metres away from play equipment and keep your dog under effective control.

 

After you have enjoyed the park's amenities, you can access Howrah Beach by walking toward the long concrete walking track. This family-friendly 3.1km track begins near Howrah Beach Jetty and Carpark and follows the coast behind the dunes, and ends at Bellerive Beach Park, providing stunning views over Howrah Beach from the Second Bluff.

 

The track is primarily concrete, with a gravel section around the Second Bluff, making it ideal for cycling or walking. For those walking, you can walk along the beach and hop back on the track in various spots along the beach. You can continue for an extended walk or ride following the Derwent River shores from Howrah to Geilston Bay.

 

Howrah Beach can be accessed from several locations, including off Silwood Avenue, from Wentworth Park and Wentworth Park Play Park.

 

If you love to entertain or have a special event coming up, you can hire out the Howrah Community Centre, which can accommodate meetings, work events, kids’ parties, wedding receptions and baby showers, among other events. The centre has ample space and parking, making it an excellent venue for various occasions.

 

If you are interested in joining a community group, the Howrah Men’s Shed welcomes all men from Clarence and beyond. It’s a non-profit organisation that provides a place for men to meet, make friends, learn, teach and participate in practical projects with the aim of improving men’s health and well-being. You can visit the shed and have a cuppa with the members to see if you would also like to join the team!

Things to do in Howrah Tasmania

Nature and recreation spots in Howrah

There is a natural bushland named the Waverly Flora Park located behind Howrah that is easily accessible. You can enjoy a moderate walk on the Waverly Wildflower Walk, which will take you approximately an hour of exploring in the bush.

 

This is a popular spot amongst locals who enjoy the abundance of wild orchids, native plants and sandstone, and it is amongst their favourite regular walking spots. For more information about this track, refer to the Clarence Council’s guide here.

Dining and cafes

Looking for a spot that has it all? Look no further than The Shoreline Hotel! This local favourite offers a variety of dining options, from casual café fare to elegant evening meals. Whether you are planning a romantic dinner for two or a big family gathering, they have the perfect space to accommodate you. Plus, their outdoor playground makes family-friendly dining a breeze.

 

But it is not just about the food at The Shoreline Hotel. They also have a modern sports bar complete with a cozy log fire, as well as affordable accommodations, with many featuring stunning views of the Derwent River and Mount Wellington, Kunanyi.

 

If you are in the mood for something quick and tasty, head to Banjos Bakery in the Shoreline Plaza. They deliver their locals with bakery goods and hot coffee—a great place to stop before shopping at Woolworths.

 

For a more extensive menu, try Atmosfire Cafe Restaurant, located on the main Howrah Road.

 

There are other dining options in Howarh as well, including Pizza Hut Howrah, Ja and Jon, and Wok Box, and for a very sweet treat, Donut King is the perfect place to indulge after your meal.

Shopping and services

Located in the town of Howrah, Shoreline Plaza offers a variety of stores that provide you with all your necessities. Among them are Amcal Pharmacy, Woolworths, Total Eyecare Optometrists,  Super Dollars Warehouse, Eastern Shore Doctors, Cotton Fresh Drycleaners, Express Service Centre, 9/11 Bottleshop, and Zap Fitness.

 

If you are looking for free-range products from local Tasmanian farmers, visit Shoreline Meats, which is also situated in Shoreline Plaza. You can purchase in-store, order for delivery, or use the click-and-collect option!

 

If you can’t find what you need at the local plaza, the largest shopping centre in Tasmania is only 10 minutes away. Eastlands boasts a range of stores, including Big W and Kmart, Woolworths and Coles, JB Hi-Fi, Michael Hill, Natures Works, and plenty of clothing stores!

Schools in Howrah

The beachside suburb is home to Howrah Primary School, a large and prosperous school in the region.
